  Theme

The methodology is based on a double process which resembles a mirror: France listens to and contemplates Taiwan, Taiwan listens to and contemplates France. REMETAO develops sound as a research topic, not only as an object which can be used to produce and transmit a musical work, but also as a concept. An in-depth study of the concept of sound (or, to put it differently, the sonic), as found in electroacoustic and traditional music, is indispendable to understand, for instance, the practices of diffusion, but also to take in account and apprise the practices and habits in a Society. The method which will be put to use involves examining thoroughly all the aspects involved, the production environments and practices, the transfer and use of sound objects on various media, as well as their respective relevance, the evolution over time of the musical practives in both domains (electroacoustic and traditional), the various ways of listening and modes of reception, all this requires a manifold approach. Several fields must be called upon : ethnology, history, musicology, organology. Finally, REMETAO will also use various methods of data analysis, in particular at the knowledge base phase.

REMETAO is concerned with electroacoustic production and use of new technology in ethno- musicological research throughout the whole of East Asia. If the work conducted within the Orchid framework is geared toward Taiwan, there will be additional endeavours on the other countries from East Asia. We are however pleased that REMETAO starts its actual work through Orchid and that the first step is about Taiwan and it's music.

Within the partnership are gathered scholars from various fields: musicologists, ethnomusicologists, composers, technosciences experts, computer scientists. The project involves several doctoral students from Taiwan and from France.
